Morningstar Nature Refuge Needs You

A private refuge has many ongoing needs. Morningstar is no exception. Many of you have offered your time and your finances over the years and Morningstar could not be the special place it has become without you. I hope that each of you takes pride and a degree of ownership in its success.

For others who have not been aware of our needs, we are sharing this wish list of the many things required to keep a place like this going. If you or your group would like to help, there are many, many ways to do so. From tools to time to funding, there is a way that almost anyone can help Morningstar Nature Refuge. Please call or email to inquire about our tax status before making donations.

Funds
We are in particular need of financial donations in order to maintain the refuge such as hire heavy-duty trail work, repair signs and add new signage, care for exhibits and carry out many new or ongoing projects, as well as help with publishing.

Volunteers

No matter your talent or skills (or even if you don't think you have any) there is a task here for you! We desperately need adult volunteers to do light maintenance work such as sweep, dust, rake, check trails for damage, get limbs off trails and provide the general outdoor upkeep required to keep a small nature center going.

Indoors, we need help to maintain our library and help with lab upkeep, organize materials, photocopy, photograph and file. We would be happy to have these kinds of help "once in a while" or on a regular basis.

  • Yard rakes, particularly the small bush rakes

  • Pitch forks, shovels, hoses, hoes and general yard tools

  • Hand pruners of every size from small to large

Outdoor Materials and Other Items

  • Landscaping timbers, new or old

  • Cedar fence rails and posts, new or old

  • Pine straw and pine bark chips for trail upkeep in holes and damp areas

  • Tomato racks for placement over endangered, threatened plant species

  • All sizes and types of bird boxes, including bat and butterfly boxes, wood duck and owl

  • Dipping nets and butterfly and insect nets

Flora and Fauna

  • Koi fish for small pond and large gold fish and fish food

  • Herbs, various plants and herbs for sensory garden, including certain bulbs

Indoor Helps

  • Shop tools, both hand and electric

  • Boots of various sizes

Again, our many thanks to those of you who have helped in the past or who have become regular helpers. We could not do it without you!  And for those who are looking for a good project to take part in, you can make a difference here!
